Piedmont captured the 2010 Calhoun County junior high girls basketball tournament with an exciting 33-27 win over Donoho Friday night at Piedmont.
Freshman Brittany Holloway led the Bulldogs with 12 points and had 11 steals.
Eighth-grader Shimmarriye Thompson was second in points for Piedmont with 10 and added 16 rebounds.
Seventh-graders Melissa Fortenberry and Riesha Thompson had four points and three points respectively.
In the semifinal round, the Bulldogs defeated White Plains 42-30. Holloway led the way with 19 points.
Freshman Morgan Blackerby had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Seventh-grader Carlie Flowers grabbed 11 rebounds and seventh-grader Tatiana Green scored five points. Fortenberry had four points.
Piedmont opened the tournament with a 49-13 win over Jacksonville Christian.
Green scored 14 points, including two 3-point baskets.
Blackerby had eight points. Holloway and Paige Gowens each scored five points.
Flowers and Lenecia Spear had four points each. Shimmarriye Thompson led on the boards with nine rebounds and Fortenberry had seven rebounds.
Holloway was voted the tournament’s outstanding offensive player and Shimmarriye Thompson the outstanding defensive player.
Blackerby and Riesha Thompson were also members of the all-tournament team.
Piedmont coach Terrace Ridley said hard work was the key to the development of this year’s team that opened the season 0-6 and finished 11-8.
